Clara Hill – Pendulous Moon (Deluxe Edition)

• Stream & Download

For Clara Hill, there was never a question about why she might end up making an album with King Britt. It was always a question of when. The Berlin-based singer, songwriter, and producer has shifted styles fluidly throughout her life, and in Philadelphia producer / DJ King Britt she found a like-minded soul with a similarly restless spirit.

“King Britt is totally open-minded,” Hill elaborates, “a sensitive musician with multifaceted talents who never stops discovering new musical styles, and his tastes are as broad and far-reaching as mine. Both of us explore experimentation in different musical genres: King Britt from House to Techno to Bass music, me from Acid Jazz to psychedelic folk.”

Indeed, Hill’s journey to Pendulous Moon’s uniquely chimerical aesthetic began as a child with experiments on a piano at her aunt’s East German home. Over time, these led to the blissful acoustic soul of the albums she made for Jazzanova’s legendary Sonar Kollektiv label between 2004 and 2007, before she took a left turn with Walk The Distance (Tapete Records, 2013), a beguiling combination of songcraft and abstract sonic experimentation. She found there a common bond with Britt, whose career began in the 1990s, taking in, amongst many genres, hip hop, jazz, funk, and soul, but who shares her interest in independent electronic music.

In truth, it’s not the first time they’ve collaborated. In 2006, they worked together on ‘Did I Do Wrong?’, a song for Hill’s second album, All I Can Provide, and they’ve remained in regular contact since, swapping stories of the music, films, and art that have moved them. They were finally reunited at the end of 2014 in Berlin, where they worked day and night on the album’s original sketches in Hill’s apartment before she retired to the countryside outside the German capital to work on the vocal arrangements over the course of seven intense weeks. The final touches were then provided by Britt in his Philadelphia studio, where he also mixed the album.

Clearly, their ongoing cultural exchange laid the foundations for an inspired partnership: Pendulous Moon finds the two united by their love for a sound that flutters elusively between the likes of FKA Twigs, Vangelis, and Boards Of Canada. An eerie experience from start to end, it flits from the heavenly voices of ‘Spheres’ to the infinite, almost gaseous murmur of ‘Dron3’ via the brittle twitch of ‘Lonely Glow’, the impatient thrust of ‘Asynchronous’, the futuristic neo-soul of ‘D.E.F.’, the dark throb of ‘Moons’ – which, perhaps not surprisingly, recalls The KLF’s cult ‘Space’ – and the desolate emptiness of ‘Nano Suns’. It exists, you might say, in a universe of its own.

No doubt Hill’s physical state during their early sessions propelled the album’s unearthly sound. “I was ill,” she explains, “but we couldn’t postpone our meeting. At times I had a fever, and my joints were swollen, and the day after we finished I was rushed to hospital. Music hurts!” But primarily its otherworldly atmosphere stems from their ambition to create a record that they describe as “sci-fi”, pairing analogue synths and digital sounds to conjure up a world that, as Hill puts it, combines “metallic sounds and soft voices: intimate and strange, romantic and edgy. We tried to visualise songs, inspired by pictures of planetary nebula and other images of space.”

This is reflected in Hill’s lyrics, which speak of “the curve of the earth”, colliding suns, difficulties in communication, and a space where, even if no one can hear you scream, “the silence roar(s)”. The album’s title, too, encapsulates both the crepuscular nature of the resulting music and the working methods that led there.

“We saw ourselves as two planets that collide – in a positive sense – furthering our musical ideas,” Hill concludes. “The moon was our fixed point, a pendulum in the darkness, a calming counterpoint to a kind of musical trance in which I sometimes moved while we made music. And then, soon after we’d finished the album, I was out in the countryside and saw a blood moon rising. There could be no other title than Pendulous Moon.”

Sometimes, though, you’ve got to reach for the stars too. Clara Hill and King Britt have done just that.

ARCo. 2017 – In Review

Our Catalogue makes us very proud, sometimes the days go by and we move onto the next project, and then the next and we do sometimes forget what we’ve achieved, so to give respect to our wonderful releases we asked some of the most discerning industry heads to let us know what they enjoyed most of all.

This is the ARCo. Catalogue 2017 reviewed by Marcia Carr, Osunlade, Fred Everything, At One, Atjazz, Jullian Gomes, Kyri R2 & More…

All of our releases are available from the most supportive download store for independent dance music Traxsource.com Wishing all the wonderful staff at Traxsource an excellent year ahead in 2018.

First of all, Hi-Five to our label boss, A&R and general workman Atjazz for his years of dedication to the cause of independent music. His album “That Something Else” saw it’s digital release in 2017, 1 year after the 3x CD was launched in 2016. Check out the album below. This is our Staff pick of the year, Congratulations Martin for sticking with it for over 20 Years.

• Atjazz – 20YA That Something Else

Marc – ‘Coltrane’

A dance floor/club friendly rework, as I would envisage of ‘Giant Steps’ – a volcanic jazz classic.
As an original jazz head, the feature is just fab to introduce clubbers to the past, the roots within black music – and hit them with the groove – it epitomises what Atjazz, the label is about.
Marcia Carr (Mi-Soul / Ladyz B Like)

• Atjazz – Track 7 (Mix 1)

This turned Spring Fiesta upside down when I dropped it!!
Thee Gobbs (The Gobbs Productions / ARCo.)

• At One – Okan

Jam of the year for me is Okan from At One’s EP. All the Track #’s are killer as well of course, proper way to display what house is!
Osunlade (Yoruba Records)

• Atjazz – Track 5 (Mix 1)

Let’s start with the caveat that all of the tracks in this series could stand in this position! But for me, the song, technical production and vibe that is brought by Track 5 Mix 1, is second to none! The track takes house back to the raw, seriously. It’s energetic, emotive and euphoric! It combines a punchy lead with luscious pads and a meaty beat!

I think one of the key elements that makes this track standout so much to me is the arrangement/journey. The arrangement builds around the lead as the key foundation of the track (it’s always there!). As the lead grows, so does the beat; as the beat grows, so do the other elements of the track and once a precipice is reached, the track breaks into a raw dubby vibe! Every element of the track compliments each of its surrounding elements and thus its sonic is beautiful!

It’s great for a DJ to mix and for the listener to be engrossed in the journey. It’s one of those tracks that as a producer you listen to it, and you just can’t pull it apart. You want to remix it, but you know you can’t beat the original! Job done Mr. Iveson!
At One (Yoruba Records / Atjazz Record Company)

• Jullian Gomes – 1000 Memories (feat. Sio)

Jullian Gomes’ album has many good songs, but 1000 Memories has had a profound effect on me, Sio’s beautiful vocal is an emotional listen that I never want to end. It is so hooky and infectious, and honestly one of my favourite house tunes ever in my 30 years as a DJ. Oh and if that wasn’t enough the addition of Fred Everything and Atjazz Galaxy Aart mixes make a complete single release.
Abel (Atjazz Record Company)

• Track 3 (Mix 1)

One of those tracks that instantly connect from first hearing. Deep, melodic and bumping all at once.
Kyri (R2 Records)

• Track 6 (Mix 1)

Classic Atjazz, kept highly in rotation.
Jullian Gomes (Atjazz Record Company)

• Marc – Coltrane

In a world and industry filled with uncertainty you always look for something to make you stay in the game, a reminder of what you got into this and why you need to do this, for me, this is Atjazz Records… amongst the many solid releases that focus on different musical genres of House Music it’s main body focus on the jazz and soul of it all.

“Coltrane” steps into the light and always made me feel like i can play this at peak hour or ending a great set be it at home or on the road, solid release on a solid label, looking so forward to see what Atjazz records has for us in 2018, here is to 20 more. God Speed.
Mr. V. (Sole Channel)

• Systm B – Satisfaction

Truly what I think is a superb orchestration of electronic instruments delivering more than the sum of its parts! I love what Systm B is, I love what his music stands for, realism.
Atjazz (Atjazz Record Company / Yoruba Records / Suol)

Introducing “Abel” Our newest deep house hero!

Welcome to the family Abel!

ROUGH OR SMOOTH offers an emotive body of electronic music. A taste for deep, electronic house music and a passion for traveling sets Abel’s table with a full plate of inspiration, enabling him to dive deeper into his music production. The album features few with Abel standing strong as the main sound provider. Inviting old friend and former studio partner CRAIG JAMES to participate and subsequently MARCEL NOUVEAUX, a soul vocal artist from West London now residing in Sweden.

• Stream & Download: bit.ly.abel

This album also sees a wonderful cameo appearance from his 7 year old son ELLIOTT. ATJAZZ features throughout the album in differing roles, key to guiding Abel through his process and assisting with additional keyboards and production. Being the Son of a Jazz musician it’s really no wonder his music carries depth, emotion and style yet he incorporates his love of the moody ‘Deep House Sound’ circa 1998, very warm and rather gritty!. An early drifter and never finding comfort sitting still or settling in one place for too long, he found peace in moving continuously through Europe, mainly traveling around France, Austria and Holland. Years later, a chance meeting in Croatia connected Abel with Atjazz, they linked up and worked out two singles.

These releases were suspended pending an album in the making and… “Rough Or Smooth” was born! This is a true journeyman’s Deep House album, generating evocative and stimulating sounds for both the clubber and the specialist looking for a little more depth in their House Music collection.

★ PREMIERE ★ Atjazz – Programme Sunlight (Suol)

It’s Suol Summer Daze season. That one time of year, where we gather artists from the extended Suol family to put together tracks we believe add an extra kick to the positive vibes coming from sunbeams and summer atmosphere. These are gifted producers from different parts of the world sharing one common denominator – soulful deep house music.

After some years of the compilation being released in the familiar format of an album with a tight tour de force of tracks, we’ve decided to try with a new form – this issue will be a series of 3 compilation EPs. The intention of it being, to give all these strong and independent tracks a sharpened focus. Each EP will therefore consist of 6 high-quality, exclusive and previously unreleased tracks from both Suol and the extended family.

This EP takes off with Atjazz’ “Programme Sunlight”, which is an electronic, emotional & trippy deep summer groove. Typical Atjazz quality!

Give a warm welcome to… Tomahawk Bang.

We at ARCo. are very proud to introduce the mysterious warrior of sound, Tomahawk Bang.

For Tomahawk Bang, music is “Himdag” or the “way of life.” As a native of Arizona’s Onk Akimel O’odham tribe; the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, Tomahawk developed his relationship with music whilst participating in traditional ceremonies on his homeland. The deeply spiritual nature of his culture serves as one of the clearest influences and most pertinent characteristics of his music. In the world of Tomahawk Bang, the music was, is, and will always be an indigenous experience.

“What first gets you into something, that never goes away. The initial inspiration… it’s mind blowing. You never forget.” –Tomahawk Bang

profile pic 2

At the age of thirteen, Tomahawk Bang immersed himself in hip-hop culture, transforming into a hybrid of native customs and break beats. Bboying (break dance) played a major role in his development as an artist, exposing him to avenues of self-expression he had not encountered before. In the late 90’s, house music caught the ears of Tomahawk Bang and members of his famed dance collective “Sour Patch Crew.” House music opened the door for a new type of expression in movement. After years of chasing the best house music experiences within and outside the United States, attending events as a dancer was no longer enough. By 2010 Tomahawk Bang was working on the turntables, conceiving a sound all his own.

Although his heart lies with DJing, Tomahawk Bang values music production as a vital parallel to his DJ career. As a DJ, Tomahawk Bang delves deep into the grimy cellars of underground Detroit Techno, Deep House, and Dub Tech, integrating world sounds, indigenous instruments, vintage audio samples, and all that is sonically intricate. A DJ set by Tomahawk Bang is a voyage to far off places, a one-way ticket to all the “strange” that the universe has to offer. As a producer, Tomahawk Bang gravitates towards complex instrumentals and experimental soundscapes. With over fifteen years of experience as a dancer, he creates music with the goal of movement in mind. Each song embodies a narrative, tracing his bloodlines back to the sacred days of the natural world. His music is the intersect point between our digital future, and his ancestral past.

In 2014, Tomahawk Bang released his first single “Spirit in the Water” to the bay area’s Catch the Ghost records. Closely behind were two more single releases with CTG: “Dark Emergence” and “False Pretenses,” records that exemplified Tomahawk’s momentum and growth as an electronic artist. His first EP “Spirit in the Mountain” released to Paris electronic music label BeatXChangers on May 4, 2015 and caught a wave of attention from the house music community. Amidst his accomplishments and personal aspirations in music are his plans to wholly represent the Native American community, using the “Himdag” he has cultivated to inspire the next generation of indigenous peoples to follow their passions, and express their creative talents on a larger scale.

You can now purchase Tomahawk Bang’s debut ARCo. release, The Sacrifice on iTunes.

More from Si Tew:

Si Tew – Breathe (feat. Molly) Official music video.

Eclectic producer, and dear friend of Atjazz Record Company, Si Tew returns from remixing the likes of Aloe Blacc and The Bamboos with a collaboration featuring the incredibly talented vocalist Molly to produce this moody sonic output. The exciting next step on his relationship with ARCo which began in 2009.

Coarse and detailed downbeat rhythms set the pace for the atmospheric number “Breathe” where it is pushed further into the realm of the ethereal by a delicate and lingering vocal that acts as a perfect counterpoint to the dark vibe of the piece.

Then up steps the master Martin Atjazz, alongside one of his partners in production TrueSelf (fresh off the worldwide release of his “The Good Cause” project), who keep the delightfully pitched vocal and layer up a hip-shaker of a melody underneath to keep the you moving. I dare you not to tap your foot to this one.

Si Tew then returns to the fray with a thoughtful remix which cleverly keeps the mood of the original cut but takes the otherworldly effect of Molly’s sweet vocal to the next level. A smooth and contemplative effort to close out a deep and pensive release.

Your ears will thank you!

Si Tew is back… Cut & Run!

An incredible addition to our “Years Of The Abstract” series.

More luscious textures from our son of sound “Si Tew”. His very personal and characteristic sound raised many eyebrows over the last few years and his attention to detail shows his dedication to his life of music. Cut & Run is a personal and difficult journey into sound and this audio construction is in turn a shoulder to lean on; Quality and deep music from a very dedicated soul.

Elise – Poseidon (Vinyl Out Now)

Information:

A while in the making, an incredible set of reworks of this beautifully delivered song are finally here! ‘Elise’ presents us with the awesomeness of ‘Poseidon’.

This package has been carefully reworked by some of the dance music industry’s prime producers, and each remix sings it’s own love song. ‘Atjazz’ has spent a whole year ‘on and off’ making sure his remix delivers something new, with a nod to his next full length album project this new wave of glossy soul music oozes passion and melts into Elise’s perfectly delivered vocals, a match made in heaven. ‘At One’, known for his thunderous music has lightened up his musicality to give us a solid yet respectful remix which pushes the vocal smoothly along. ‘Yoruba Records’ head man ‘Osunlade’ has once again cleared the table with his signature sound in the form of the ‘Yoruba Soul Mix’ which brings to our ears everything we love about his sound, working again in perfect harmony with Elise’s offering to the ancient gods. ARCo.’s own ‘Si Tew’ bumps his beats up in two forms, his ‘Late Night Remix’ for a softer approach and his straight up “Si Tew Remix” for the vinyl release which is set to help us click our heels across the dance-floor.

The digital release brings with it a heap of exclusives, the first in the form of the ‘Simbad Suite’ which takes Elise’s heartfelt vocal and swamps it with pads that pull strongly on those heartstrings. The beats are as tight as is to be expected from the quirky East London producer but the bar is raised even further when the sub drops late in the mix. ‘The Layabouts’ also join this story with a much wider scope on their rework, melodic and progressive, both the vocal mix & Instrumental drive through verses, middle eights & choruses with awesome power. Last up, but definitely not least is the apple bobbing ‘Leaked Wisdom Dub’, a fellow video game music producer of Martin Atjazz’s from back in the day, this guys really drives this vocal out by chopping and repeating it to create a subby garage banger.

Overall this package has something for everyone and will fit all tastes of dance music from tech-house to soul and everything in between.
