Clyde Beats – Hyper Reality 2 (An English Gentleman)

Clyde Beats returns with “Hyper Reality 2: An English Gentleman”, a follow-up to his 2004 debut, bringing his signature wonky beats and disregard for quantization and traditional musicianship. This latest album is more polished, funkier, and deeper than its predecessor, making it a must-listen for fans of the genre.

If you like your beats wonky and enjoyed this album’s predecessor, 2004’s ‘Hyper Reality’, then you’ll love ‘Hyper Reality 2: An English Gentleman’, available on Atjazz Record Company. Clyde Beats (formerly Clyde) is back from the future with his next instalment, only this time it’s more polished, funkier and deeper. But as before, this release shows as much contempt towards quantisation as it does orthodox musicianship throughout.

The mood is set as ‘Hyper Reality 2: An English Gentleman’ opens with ‘See Your True Self’. A Prophet 5 synth line sets the atmosphere, complemented by a cheeky, yet assured Rhodes hook, both elegantly delivered by Atjazz. Clyde Beatses rich vocal moodily saunters over a jerky beat and upright bass hook.

‘It’s True’ sees Clyde Beats reunited with hugely-talented vocalist and co-songwriter, Jane Hamilton, which is closely followed by the album’s house-oriented track, ‘ILVURSND’. ‘Rising Up’ proudly features a vocalist Clyde Beats has eagerly followed for some years through her Tokyo Dawn releases: Amalia sings about a chronicle of ascension over Clyde Beatses somewhat 80s-meets-Boom bap sound. Elegant horns come courtesy of Octavio N. Santos who also contributes similar flava to ‘Better’, ‘Hold Me Back’, and ‘I Quit’: a track he spits on under his Swanky Swagger moniker.

‘Hold Me Back’ was co-written with another long-time collaborator and friend, Peacey. Having recovered from ‘challenging breakups’, they yet again documented their shared experiences and wrote together. ‘Better’ reflects on how toxic partners ultimately contributed towards them being stronger people.

Another single, ‘Hello World feat. OVEOUS’ is a tough, minimalistic, beat-driven joint. It knocks, and on top of it, OVEOUS delivers rhymes as hard as they are spiritual.

“The term ‘An English Gentleman’ is a proud reference to the UK’s distinctive sounds and it’s a play on the Britishness of characters including James Bond. It’s also how an overseas girlfriend would humorously refer to me in the company of her friends”, mused Clyde Beats.

Just when you thought it was safe to play conscientious hip hop, Clyde Beats and ‘Hello World (feat. OVEOUS)’ comes along.

The release is a masterful blend of contrasting elements, with OVEOUS’ spiritual and uplifting lyrics served up over the dark, aggressive beats of Clyde Beats. The result is a sonic experience that’s both powerful and thought-provoking, with the two artists coming together to create a unique sound that’s both hard-hitting and inspiring.

Described by some as a renaissance artist, OVEOUS is a true street poet, singer, rapper, DJ and producer and the superlative rhymes he lays over Clyde Beats’ dark, yet high-end production is going to drive you to visit any leading music streaming or download service now.

•  Stream & Download: Rising Up (feat. Amalia)

Stepping back into the future, ‘Rising Up (feat. ‘Amalia’)’ is Clyde Beats’ premier single from his new album ‘Hyper Reality 2 (An English Gentleman)’.

As the title suggests, ‘Rising Up’ documents a quest for positive living. Amalia’s sassy delivery complements Clyde Beats’ somewhat retro hip-hop production incredibly well. The result is a rewarding tune you’ll want to turn up loud and play on repeat.

From a boom-bap-type beat, a TB303 riff and a very 80s-sounding bassline, live horns by Clyde Beats’ long-time collaborator, ‘Octavio N. Santos’, juxtapose this very feel-good tune.

“Having followed Amalia’s astounding career, the opportunity to work with her was an appealing one, to say the least”, mused Clyde Beats. “With many of my musical values hailing from the early 90s, I thought ‘Amalia’ and I could revisit that era together. I’m delighted I invited her because her performance is simply outstanding. This is a tune I’m very proud to release”, he concluded.

Artist Focus: Peacey

Beginnings

Introduced to the world of vinyl in the 80s by his Uncle Tim, Peacey was immediately mesmerised. Little did Uncle Tim know of the butterfly effect he’d trigger, as this introduction laid the foundations for a far-reaching, impactful and lifelong journey through music.

Peacey’s evolution took in plenty of clubbing, assimilating the art of DJing, and eventually, production, which brings us to his current destination: Peacey’s debut album, ‘Play It By Ear’. It’s an eclectic sonic journal, cataloguing Peacey’s interactions with, and influences from, some of dance music’s notable players. However, how did we get to this point and what else shaped the Peacey we know today?

Growing up in a Christian musical family, as an acclaimed organist, Peacey’s grandad would leave an indelible mark. Peacey would often find himself absorbed in programming the organ’s albeit primitive electronic drums, together with programming its peculiar, entrancing arpeggiator sounds. These moments would serve as foundations of his enduring connection to instruments and music from this very young age.

The DJ Journey

By the 1990s, Peacey’s musical trajectory took another turn as he became heavily influenced by Jungle and Hip Hop. This shift was bolstered by a visit to his friend Tiz, whose elder brother introduced him to Technics turntables. Peacey rapidly honed his skills, making mixtapes and even adding emceeing to his repertoire. The ascent of UK and Speed Garage sounds prompted Peacey to delve deeper, even building a custom antenna to discover pirate radio stations. It was on Nottingham’s Groove City FM that he stumbled upon DJ Chris Lockdown. Impressed with Peacey’s talent, Chris offered him his debut warm-up slot at Derby’s renowned Loft. From there onwards, Peacey’s ascent throughout the DJ world continued, with memorable radio appearances, DJ residencies and an unforgettable gig at the Ministry Of Sound.

Production and Collaborations

Peacey’s tech-savvines, his musical abilities, and not to mention almost two decades of mentorship from lifelong friend, Martin Iveson, all ensured a fruitful progression into music production. Peacey’s proficiency with analogue synths and platforms like Cubase resulted in him producing exciting and distinctive sounds. Collaborative efforts bore their fruit too, with significant work alongside Craig Smith on the ‘Unknown Formula EP’. His debut album, ‘Play It By Ear’, is a testament to this musical journey. The album features collaborations with Clyde and Atjazz and reflects upon a journey of poignant moments and personal experiences.

Legacy

Peacey would consistently draw inspiration from a broad circle of talented individuals. Apart from family influences like Uncle Tim and his grandad, local talents like Scott Thompson, Scott Lorimer, Lee Whitehead and Marcus Shukla, Clyde and Martin Atjazz Iveson, to name but a few, all played pivotal roles in Peacey’s development.

To encapsulate what brought him to the point of releasing his debut album, Peacey humorously referenced his notorious attention to detail: ‘Don’t let the ADHD get in the way of a good album’, he quipped. After all, ‘Play It By Ear’ is a meticulously written and recorded catalogue of music. It’s an album that will attract discerning ears and diverse audiences, thanks to it spanning a multitude of genres including Hip Hop, R&B, House, Garage and Fusion.

Clyde – Hyper Reality

The Encyclopaedia Britannica says “funk defies literal definition”. Damn right it defies literal definition. What on earth is “funky”? Are any of those “funky house” tracks truly funky — ie, exhibiting that unmistakable marriage of bass and beats that propels heads to nod. Those are scarce.

In fact, if you want remarkable funk, head to the unremarkable English city of Derby where Clyde, aka Clive Astin, resides. His track Serve It Up is outrageously funky. You’d have to be in a coma not to rock your head to this tremendous tune that features the laid-back rap of San Francisco’s Capitol A. And there are many other up-tempo corkers that will elicit a similar finger-snapping response.

Roll Of The Beast, Broken Slang, and Gedaroom will all send booties a-shaking, such are their infectious rhythms. But before you whip out your flares, understand that Clyde’s sound is a contemporary one. Amid the catchy grooves are elements of hip hop, soul, and a hint of house. Combined with Clyde’s knack of fusing fulsome basslines with beguiling beats and you have a rare phenomenon: a dance album that’s genuinely funky.

Classic Music From The RAH Band

We thought we would share this wonderful classic song from The RAH Band just for the heck of it!…

“Clouds Across the Moon” is a song written by Richard Anthony Hewson. It was released as a single in March 1985 on his studio group the RAH Band’s album Mystery. The single reached the top 10 of the singles charts in the UK, The Netherlands and Sweden. The vocals were performed by Hewson’s wife Liz

Atjazz – More Than A Remix – R2 Records

Having garnered a hardcore underground following since beginning his musical journey in the mid nineties, it is only in the last few years Martin ‘Atjazz’ Iveson has finally impacted on the wider soulful dance community. What many of his new fans don’t know is that Atjazz has been responsible for some of the most original and exciting productions of the last 15 years.

The RAH Band

Hewson founded The RAH Band – of which he was the sole member and which took its name from his initials – in 1977 – to release an instrumental called “The Crunch”. The piece climbed to number 6 in the UK Singles Chart.[4] Hewson played all the musical instruments himself. The arrangement involved the use of no synthesisers, only conventional guitar and keyboards with pedal effects. A number of jazz funk releases followed. The second big hit single for the RAH Band was in 1985, when the soul balladClouds Across the Moon“, also reached number 6 in the UK chart.[4] Vocals were provided by his wife Liz.[2]

In July 2007, Hewson released a remixedClouds Across the Moon ’07“, now featuring vocalist Emma Charles.[5]

The RAH band’s releases were issued under a variety of record labels, including Good Earth Records, DJM, KR Records, TMT Records and RCA.[4]
