This Grammy Award-winning Musician has worked alongside many great artists throughout his career, notably on Ludovic Navarre’s ST GERMAIN project, on stage with the wonderful MELODY GARDOT and as an integral member of the JOE ZAWINUL Syndicate that allowed him to share the stage with other greats, such as HERBIE HANCOCK, BEBEL GIBERTO, HITONARI TSUJI, CHEICK TIDIANE and BOBBU MCFERRIN. Recently, Jorge has reached even deeper into the realm of Electronic Music as he lends his talent to projects with Boddhi Satva, Atjazz and Zepherin Saint to name a few.

Magic Number – All I Ever Wanted (Atjazz Remixes)

‘All I Ever Wanted’ is the 4th single from Magic Number’s sophomore album ‘Badly Written Songs’. The original, as we know by now, is an 80s-tinged pop crossover number loaded with class, it nods to those Synth-Wave classics and is beautifully topped off with the gorgeous vocal tones of Sophia Marshall.

Considering their long history of musical antics together (and there have been many!), it seemed fitting to have Atjazz jump on remix detail initially. Atjazz smooths things out with his usual sound set of layered Rhodes, Moog, Poly-Synths and other twiddly noise-making machines. Martin firmly nails these shimmering remixes with clear beat production and modern stylings.

This is the first in a long series of reworks for this beautifully colourful album. Keep your ears open and your eyes peeled for more.

Jorge Bezerra – Reverence (Boddhi Satva Remix)

Brazil meets Africa in a head-to-head collision of ancestral styles.

Following the massive remixes Mojuba by ZEPHERIN SAINT & Kabiecilé by ATJAZZ, we now bring back to the label one of our family, BODDHI SATVA, who needs no introduction and this syncopated throw-down is seriously top-drawer. With a little more tempo than his usual output, BODDHI leaves us with a full-on dance-floor remix of Jorge’s beautiful REVERENCE, holding Jorge’s vocals and percussion arrangements clear, present and correct.

Clyde Beats – Hyper Reality 2 (An English Gentleman)

Clyde Beats returns with “Hyper Reality 2: An English Gentleman”, a follow-up to his 2004 debut, bringing his signature wonky beats and disregard for quantization and traditional musicianship. This latest album is more polished, funkier, and deeper than its predecessor, making it a must-listen for fans of the genre.

Stream & Download: Hyper Reality 2 (An English Gentleman)

If you like your beats wonky and enjoyed this album’s predecessor, 2004’s ‘Hyper Reality’, then you’ll love ‘Hyper Reality 2: An English Gentleman’, available on Atjazz Record Company. Clyde Beats (formerly Clyde) is back from the future with his next instalment, only this time it’s more polished, funkier and deeper. But as before, this release shows as much contempt towards quantisation as it does orthodox musicianship throughout.

The mood is set as ‘Hyper Reality 2: An English Gentleman’ opens with ‘See Your True Self’. A Prophet 5 synth line sets the atmosphere, complemented by a cheeky, yet assured Rhodes hook, both elegantly delivered by Atjazz. Clyde Beatses rich vocal moodily saunters over a jerky beat and upright bass hook.

‘It’s True’ sees Clyde Beats reunited with hugely-talented vocalist and co-songwriter, Jane Hamilton, which is closely followed by the album’s house-oriented track, ‘ILVURSND’. ‘Rising Up’ proudly features a vocalist Clyde Beats has eagerly followed for some years through her Tokyo Dawn releases: Amalia sings about a chronicle of ascension over Clyde Beatses somewhat 80s-meets-Boom bap sound. Elegant horns come courtesy of Octavio N. Santos who also contributes similar flava to ‘Better’, ‘Hold Me Back’, and ‘I Quit’: a track he spits on under his Swanky Swagger moniker.

‘Hold Me Back’ was co-written with another long-time collaborator and friend, Peacey. Having recovered from ‘challenging breakups’, they yet again documented their shared experiences and wrote together. ‘Better’ reflects on how toxic partners ultimately contributed towards them being stronger people.

Another single, ‘Hello World feat. OVEOUS’ is a tough, minimalistic, beat-driven joint. It knocks, and on top of it, OVEOUS delivers rhymes as hard as they are spiritual.

“The term ‘An English Gentleman’ is a proud reference to the UK’s distinctive sounds and it’s a play on the Britishness of characters including James Bond. It’s also how an overseas girlfriend would humorously refer to me in the company of her friends”, mused Clyde Beats.

Atjazz remixes Jorge Bezerra’s Kabiecilé

A wonderful world of sound exploration opens up as each moment passes. Rhodes and Soprano Sax float effortlessly over Jorge’s impeccable Percussion arrangement and low tonal vocals chants.

A firm favourite with ST GERMAIN, Atjazz’s re-work is an honest continuation of the original song with that definitive Atjazz styling. Depthy and steeped in soul, the combination of Jorge & Martin on this release is as concrete as you’ll get.

This Grammy Award-winning Musician has worked alongside many great artists throughout his career, notably on Ludovic Navarre’s ST GERMAIN project, on stage with the wonderful Melody Gardot and as an integral member of the JOE ZAWINUL Syndicate that allowed him to share the stage with other greats, such as HERBIE HANCOCK, CARLOS SANTANA and BOBBY MCFERRIN. Recently, Jorge has reached even deeper into the realm of Electronic Music as he lends his talent to projects with Boddhi Satva, Atjazz and on this particular release, the brilliant ZEPHERIN SAINT who has remixed Mojubá into the spiritual world of percussive deep-house.

Artist Focus: Magic Number

Known to many as a Bass Player, to others as a Downtempo Producer and to increasingly more as an Orchestral Composer, Ross Hillard is a Leicestershire, UK native. He releases music under the alias of Magic Number and is celebrating the release of his new album, ‘Badly Written Songs’, available now on Atjazz Record Company.

Ross Hillard first appeared laying down incredibly accomplished bass performances on releases through Derby, UK label, Mantis Recordings. These included tracks on Atjazz albums, and he also provided his talent further afield, appearing on releases on Sonar Kollektiv, Stereo Deluxe, and Flower Records, to name just some.

Around the early noughties, Magic Number dropped the acclaimed debut album ‘That Day’, also through the eminent Mantis Recordings label. A string of singles followed, including ‘That Day’, ‘Sorry’ and ‘Fly Away’. With the “That Day’ album making a transition to Numb Records, and following a reprise featuring remixes from Atjazz in 2013, the Magic Number project seemingly took a hiatus. However, the man behind the project was busier than ever honing his skills. His bass playing, production and engineering capabilities can be heard on releases by Louie Vega, DJ Spen, N’dinga Gaba, Lay-Far and Atjazz, the founder of Mantis Recordings and the eponymously named label behind the new Magic Number release. Ross has also provided bass to Atjazz and Kerri Chandler live sets, pleasing countless crowds across the globe.

Ross opened Paddocks Recording Studios, an impressive setup boasting huge live spaces and cutting-edge technology, integrated with a distinguished array of analogue kit. The studio space features an incredible collection of synthesisers and outboard kit. There’s also a concert grand piano and a fully-restored vintage Raindirk mixing desk. Ross has also developed a superb range of audio plugins using this facility.

And so, Ross’s non-stop musical work, in tandem with his evolving jazz composition skills, brings us to the more sophisticated rebirth of Magic Number: ‘Badly Written Songs” comprises a carefully structured and well-produced array of songwriting, topped with live instrumentation, commanding vocal performances and high-end production. The opening track, being the first single from this album, is the positively-anthemic gem entitled ‘Good Morning Sunshine’. It tells a forward-looking story promoting the merits of getting back into the driving seat of life. It is propelled further by superb jazz-inspired drums and live horns that build up to an exhilarating crescendo. Featuring the vocal talents of Sophia Marshall, the story she paints is supported by a wonderful, darkly humorous cartoon video. An animated cadaver hilariously acts out her notions of positive living.

On the album’s title, Ross explained: “The title is a tongue-in-cheek reference to how transient electronic music can be. Thus, writing songs in this genre might not have been the most sensible and sustainable idea”, he laughs. “But I love house music, so it was worth it. I just hope people don’t discard it too soon. And if they do, well, we had great fun and a great journey producing it”, he concluded.

Abel – Jazz In The Room (Jimpster & Peacey remixes)

► STREAM & DOWNLOAD

After an amazing festival season, with DJ after DJ dropping Abel’s last output ‘CAN’T LET YOU GO (FEAT. RONA RAY)’, we’ve some exciting development to disclose. We’re elated to announce that two of our favourite remixers have joined the ‘COSMIC LAW‘ lineup and will be remixing Abel’s ‘JAZZ IN THE ROOM’.

Although no introduction is needed, for the second time on the label, we’re more than stoked to welcome back the mighty ‘JIMPSTER’ on remix detail. ‘JIMPSTER’ does what only he can do, and he loads us with an outstanding arrangement and re-composition of Abel’s original. With layers almost impossible to unpeel, the groove is locked down tight. This rendition will undoubtedly become a mainstay for the true deep-house heads.

To enhance this offering further, our very own ‘PEACEY‘ steps up to the mixing desks. We’re incredibly proud of his almost untouchable quality of work, and this time ‘PEACEY’ turns out a brilliant remix-dub which builds gently, yet demonstrates total direction throughout.

Enjoy the ride folks! There’s “JAZZ IN THE ROOM”!

Magic Number – Good Morning Sunshine

Made entirely of Felt it seems!, Ross ‘Magic Number’ is Back!!!

Magic Number’s last release might have been some time ago, but you’ve probably been routinely listening to the major force behind the project. Ross Hillard’s masterful musicianship shines through in many notable dance music releases. Having honed his skills whilst crafting his forthcoming second long player, the breathtaking first single, Good Morning Sunshine, is now ready for us to enjoy.|

This positive, anthemic gem is driven by the vocal talent of Sophia Marshall, heard elsewhere with the acclaimed The Havenots on Cooking Vinyl Records. Her memorable vocal hook is followed by an empowering story of taking back control of life. She prompts us to not let life pass us by and to relish those precious moments with those we love. A superb, darkly humorous animated video complements the release. As Sophia’s vocals remind us all “You can’t change the world when you’re ten feet underground”, a post-burial, cartoon corpse comes back to life. The reanimated character then amusingly performs the ensuing story of positive living. Propelling these sentiments further, uplifting jazz-inspired drums and horns intensify throughout the song, culminating in a superb trumpet solo: a crescendo leaving us craving an encore.

From the well-received That Day LP, released through the esteemed Mantis Recordings in 2004, Magic Number is a renowned downtempo and orchestral composer. His engineering and bass playing can be experienced through releases featuring Louie Vega, Kerri Chandler and, of course, Atjazz, the originator of Mantis Recordings and owner of the eponymously named home of this release.

It’s Ross Hillard’s evolving talent that leads us to the renaissance of the Magic Number project; creative songwriting, explorative composition and high-end production that can all be experienced throughout the forthcoming LP, Badly Written Songs. This first instalment, Good Morning Sunshine, is available now on Atjazz Record Company through all leading streaming and download sites.
